Description
Before the First World War, most rural villages were surrounded by orchards. Since then 80-90% of these have been replaced by housing expansions and intensive agriculture. Traditionally managed orchards provide a habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna, hence their classification by Natural England as a highly distinctive habitat. The image slider shows the loss of orchards in the nearby village of Borrowby as an example. 2025 vs 1854. Traditional Orchard BNG units can be used by developers to offset the loss of most BNG habitats. Other Neutral Grassland, Mixed Scrub, Individual Trees and Broadleaved Woodland are all examples of habitats which can be offset through the purchase of Traditional Orchard units.
