Description
Blackwater Environmental Investment in Conservation (BEIC) has an opportunity to create a new area of saltmarsh and reedbed habitat through the process of regulated tidal exchange. The site is currently arable fields behind an earth bank seawall with a small stream feeding into the borrow dyke, this area has the potential to deliver high quality habitat creation. Using a combination of sluice control and spillway design the incoming tide can be allowed to flood managed areas behind the existing sea wall. In combination with the freshwater stream running through the site, there is great potential for a mix of freshwater and saline habitats. Surrounded by both old and new saltmarsh, and managed by a team with a proven track record of habitat management and conservation, this is a prime site for further saltmarsh creation. This site is highlighted as an area of Strategic Opportunity for habitat creation in the Essex LNRS. Baseline surveys have been completed, and feasibility work and outline plans of the site completed with support from the RSBP's East Coast Wetlands Programme. There is an opportunity to be part of customising the eventual designs of this habitat creation project, to bring a bespoke mix and range of habitats. Given the scale and initial cost of the project, a minimum Unit requirement would be in place as well as further planning and regulatory approval for any final designs.
